Subject content Infrared spectroscopy. Basic concept of IR spectroscopy, caracteristic apsorptions for functional groups. Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy, absorption of energy and electronic transitions. Structural effects on UV-Visible spectra (Woodward-Fieser rules), Lambert-Beer's law. Nuclear magnetic resonance: basic concept of NMR-spectroscopy. 1H NMR spectroscopy: chemical shifts and molecular structure, relative peak areas, spin-spin splitting, coupling constants. 13C NMR spectroscopy: chemical shifts and molecular structure. Mass spectrometry: ionisation, fragmentation and detection. Molecular ion, relative molecular weight and formule.
Aim of course This course is introducing the basic concept of spectroscopy, instructing the students to identify the compounds by means of information obtained by study of infrared, ultraviolet, mass and nuclear-magnetic resonance spectra. It gives them the ability to interpret independently the spectra. This knowledge is useful, sometimes even required, in technological praxis to follow and control processes and products.
