The Department of Clothing Technology is an organisational unit of The Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb. It boasts a long tradition in university education, scientific research and professional work in the field of garment technologies and engineering. The curriculum for the education of professionals and researchers in the field is adapted to the newly adopted system of higher education (Bologna Declaration) at the levels of undergraduate (B.Sc.), graduate (M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) studies, in a special branch of garment engineering. Apart from the state-of the-art knowledge in all the sub-fields of garment technologies, the students are able to acquire comprehensive interdisciplinary knowledge in industrial engineering, mechatronics, automation, robotics, intelligent clothes, designing manufacturing systems and management.

The Department includes specialised classrooms and contemporary laboratories for the following purposes: computerised garment construction, processing parameters, industrial engineering, mechanisms and automation of machines in garment industry and CAD/CAM systems in garment engineering, as well as a Technology workshop.

The most modern equipment includes, among other things: a 3D body scanner for contactless body measurements, a system for designing and computerised construction of garments, automata for drawing and cutting garment parts and layers, systems for joining fabrics by means of ultrasound and hot wedge, a computer-controlled robot with pneumatic clamp for transport of workpieces, numerically controlled sewing automata and a system for designing and manufacture of embroideries on all types of textiles.

The research in the Department is organised within the accepted research projects and programmes, complex technology-development and technological projects. The areas of interest in the projects are connected with the construction and behaviour of protective clothes with active thermal protection, processing parameters in garment engineering, systematic anthropometric measurements of the inhabitants of Croatia aimed at providing new standards for garment sizing, construction of protective clothes and water-washable footwear, as well as numeric modelling of weakened spots in garments. The results obtained have been published in numerous Croatian and international magazines and have been presented at important international conferences.

The researchers of the Department have also been nominated invited experts in realising numerous international research projects.

The research and professional activities of the teachers in the Department have resulted in numerous patent applications in the field of garment and textile manufacturing processes and new high-tech products.

The researchers and teachers employed in the Department have taken an active part in collaboration with the industry, making studies and projects for their purposes and organising professional sessions on the recent research and development trends and achievements in the field of garment engineering and technology, educating in this way key staff of most Croatian companies in the field.

Long and persistent effort in research, education and professional work has made the Department a central core of the research and development in the field of garment technologies in Croatia, including innovations and knowledge transfer.
