Students of the University of Zagreb won first place and an additional award at the international competition, EIT Manufacturing Teaching Factories Competition on Deep Tech
Organized by EIT Manufacturing, a public-private partnership co-funded by the European Union and one of the nine Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), the EIT Manufacturing Teaching Factories Competition (TFC) 2023/2024 on Deep Tech was held over several months.
The TFC competition is dedicated to promoting the Teaching Factories educational methodology, a collaborative approach that bridges industry and academia through challenging projects. By fostering academic-business partnerships, TFC aims to drive genuine innovation in the manufacturing sector. This collaborative framework enables participating companies to leverage solutions and ideas to provide advanced emerging technological solutions to their challenges.
Through the selection process for companies that set challenges or problem tasks for student teams, the following four companies from four countries were selected: Consorzio Intellimech/Italy, Katty Fashion/Romania, Prostoria/Croatia, and Pannon Business Network Association/Hungary.
Additionally, through the selection process, student teams from universities in the following countries were chosen: University of Patras/Greece, University of Zagreb/Croatia, Lusófona University/Portugal, and National University of Water and Environmental Engineering/Kiev.
A team of five students from the University of Zagreb, which included two students from the Faculty of Textile Technology (Tena Risek and Nikolina Tufekčić), two students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (Niko Bucalo and Josip Hanak), and one student from the School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture (Darija Barbarić), won first place and a prize of 5,000 euros, along with an additional award of 1,000 euros for promoting the participation of women in the manufacturing industry and within the student team. The team’s application was submitted by the Faculty of Textile Technology, and they participated under the mentorship of Prof. Ph.D. Slavenka Petrak.
The students tackled the challenge titled “Sustainable Textile Waste Management Solution” posed by the company Prostoria d.o.o., aiming to find a solution for sustainable management of textile waste in the production of upholstered furniture. The students mapped textile waste and developed a digital platform for trading and exchanging unused textile materials and textile waste from the cutting process as a solution to the problem task. The comprehensive solution was also designed as a future contribution to the transformation of the fashion, textile and leather sector in Croatia, as well as related industries like furniture manufacturing, in the context of sustainability, circular economy, and reduction of textile waste generated during the production of various products.
The companies that set challenges were also ranked according to their success in the competition, with Prostoria d.o.o. taking second place.
The months-long process of education by the competition organizers and collaboration between student teams and mentors from universities and industry took place via the AGORA platform, where representatives of the student teams presented their solutions to an international judging panel on April 24, 2024.
