Mobility of students

Student mobility for studies

Student mobility for studies (SMS) involves course studies and examination, as well as final thesis work at one of the partner institutions of the University of Zagreb, while it does not include independent research, which is not part of the study.

The minimum duration of this mobility is 3 months, while the maximum duration is 12 months. The duration of the SMS is generally defined by a bilateral agreement. During the international exchange, students remain enrolled in their home faculty/academy. Students with a tuition fee obligation will not be exempted out of it during their period of mobility.

The maximum duration of the SMS can be conducted within each higher education cycle as follows:

  • First cycle (undergraduate study) including short cycles (level 5 and 6 of the European Qualifications Framework),
  • Second cycle (graduate study, level 7) and
  • Third cycle (doctoral study, level 8).

Students must be enrolled at the higher education institution in a degree program leading to a recognized diploma or other recognized qualification (up to and including PhD study).

The mobility is conducted based on previously agreed inter-institutional agreements of the sending and receiving institutions, while both institutions must be holders of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education.

Before mobility, the student receives:

  • A scholarship agreement covering the mobility period, signed by the student and the sending institution;
  • A Learning Agreement that establishes a study program and is approved by the student, the sending and the receiving institution;
  • Erasmus+ Student Charter which establishes the rights and duties of the student while studying abroad.

At the end of mobility:

  • The receiving institution must provide the student and the sending institution with a transcript of records confirming whether and with what success, the agreed program has been fulfilled;
  • The sending institution must fully recognize the activities that have been satisfactorily carried out during the mobility under the Learning Agreement, through the ECTS or an equivalent system. The mobility period should be part of the Diploma Supplement.

Under the Erasmus+ program, students are awarded with a scholarship agreement to cover travel and accommodation costs associated with their study abroad.

Erasmus+ students are exempted from enrollment costs, tuition fees, exam, lab work, library service costs at the receiving institution, whether or not they receive a scholarship. During mobility the students are not exempted from receiving national scholarships or student loans. Interested students apply to the International Relations Office at their home institutions, where they can receive all relevant information on the possibilities to study abroad as well as on obtaining an EU Erasmus+ scholarship.

Student mobility for traineeship

The duration of the student mobility for traineeship (SMT) is from 2 to 10 months. The same student can receive a scholarship for both SMS and SMT, but up to a maximum of 12 months per study cycle.

As in case of the SMS, students must be enrolled at a higher education institution in a degree program leading to a recognized diploma or other recognized qualification (up to and including PhD study). Students are selected by the sending institution through a competition.

Any public or private organization active in the labor market can play the role of a student receiving organization.

Before mobility, the student receives:

  • A scholarship agreement covering the mobility period, signed by the student and the sending institution;
  • A Learning Agreement that establishes a traineeship program and is approved by the student, the sending and the receiving organization;
  • Erasmus+ Student Charter which establishes the rights and duties of the student during her/his traineeship abroad.

At the end of mobility:

  • For traineeship, which is an integral part of the curriculum, the sending institution must fully recognize the period spent abroad, through the ECTS or an equivalent system. The recognition is based on the Learning Agreement approved by all parties before mobility;
  • For traineeship, which is not part of the student's curriculum, the sending institution recognizes the period spent abroad through a Diploma Supplement or, in case of recently graduated students, by issuing a certificate for traineeship.
