Source of funding: National Recovery and Resilience Plan NPOO, European Union Solidarity Fund FSEU

Project duration: 14.11.2022.-31.12.2024.

Beneficiary: University of Zagreb Faculty of Textile Technology

Project coordinator: Prof. Anica Hursa Šajatović, Ph.D.

Project summary: The operation to restore the infrastructure, buildings and equipment of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Textile Technology, damaged in the earthquake on 28 and 29 December 2020, includes the complete renovation of the building of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Textile Technology, used by the Faculty of Textile Technology (44.06%) and the School of Fashion and Design (55.94%). The project will finance the activities of preparing project and technical documentation, execution of works, project management and administration, as well as dissemination and visibility. The building that is the subject of the operation is for public purposes, and is used in the field of science and education, was built in the period from 1963 to 1965 according to the valid building standards, with minimal seismic resistance. Its structure and static stability were damaged in the earthquake on 22 March 2020, and a detailed inspection determined that buildings D2 and D3 are unusable, as well as parts of the building connected to building D6. Additional damage in the form of expansion of existing cracks was also identified after the earthquake on 28 and 29 December 2020, and the use of the building's space is limited. After the earthquake in December 2020, the spaces that have in the meantime been partially surface-repaired were damaged again, and significant subsidence of the floor was identified in the area next to the street facade in the basement part of buildings D1 and D2 (basement). The general conclusion of the construction study and previously completed projects and expertise is that the building does not meet current regulations. The building's expansion joints are poorly or incorrectly constructed, there are problems with differential settlement that have significantly increased after two earthquakes, and certain elements do not have sufficient load-bearing capacity in accordance with existing regulations. The structure as a whole does not have sufficient stability, and it is proposed to initiate a structural renovation procedure, i.e. the preparation of a complete renovation project for the building, which will, among other parts, include an assessment of the condition of the existing building and a project for strengthening the structure.

Expected project results: The project is of paramount importance for the Faculty of Textile Technology because the complete renovation of the building that is the subject of the operation will repair the damage caused by the earthquake, carry out works to prevent further damage in order to ensure the health and life of people and preserve all the values of the existing building in the long term. The justification for the operation is also given additional weight by the purpose of the building itself as a faculty and high school space in which a large number of people reside at the same time, i.e. in which the risk of further earthquakes is greater. The complete renovation of the building in question will include the repair of earthquake damage, strengthening the structure and foundations of the building, and adaptation to modern conditions of use and safety within the existing spatial dimensions of the building.
