Subject content

Veblen, Simmel, Weber and the sociological basics of fashion; Contemporary fashion theories (cultural studies, psychoanalisis, anthropoloigy, semiotics); Modernity and fashion; Body and signs; Fetishism of fashion; Subcultures and fashion; Anti-fashion; Fashion as social constructing; Postmarxist critique of ideology and fashion; Cultural fashion; Symbolic function of fashion; Fashion and postmodernism; Revival and fashion styles; Body in the society of spectacle; The end of fashion.

Aim of course

The course examines sociological explanation of contemporary fashion phenomena. Students has to do working with basic knowledge about fashion from the perspective of social and humanistic sciences. The main goal of the course is developmnent of creative and critical attitudes in the public area. The reconsideration of social function of fashion and symbolical representation try to be a specific competence in the cultural system of fashion today. The fashion in the sociological point of vue is the system of signs, social context of values and the ground for collective and individual identity.
