Subject content

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the historical overview of ethnological research of clothing and textiles in Croatia, from the processing of textile fibres, to the making and decorating of textile materials, to the making of clothing items, and their multiple roles in the organization of social life in local communities until the middle of the 20th century. Students will also learn about the phenomenon of folklorism, namely the role of folk costumes in the creation of national identities (within Austria-Hungarian Empire, Yugoslavia and Croatia), as well as the manner of their musealization in central and local ethnographic museums.

Aim of course

Students will acquire basic knowledge about the history of ethnological research of clothing and textiles in Croatia, about the development of relevant institutions and ethnological publications, as well as basic characteristics of largely handmade peasant textiles made in the past on the territory of Croatia.
