Students will be able to:

• Recognize and define basic concepts related to the history of fashion, textiles, and art up to the 20th century and explain their development.
• Understand the influence and importance of other languages on English textile and fashion terminology in the period before the 20th century.
• Describe historical costumes from the periods before the 20th century.
• Recognize and define basic concepts related to color theory and color psychology and express their own thought on these topics.
• Discuss the difference between dressing and fashion and verbally express their critical opinions.
• Follow oral presentations related to textile and fashion fields, ask questions, and participate in discussions on topics outlined in the course content.
• Read and comprehend texts related to textiles and fashion.
• Create a timeline of fashion history as an exercise in summarizing learned content and recognizing different levels of importance in information.
• Define the concepts of learning strategies and reading strategies, name their own strategies, and describe how and when to apply them for the best results.

Subject content

Basic terminology related to periods in the history of fashion and art as well as the most important events linked to the development of textile production and design before the 20th century. Analysis of the names and changes in the names of clothing items during these periods. Recognition of the influence of other languages on English terminology. Description of the main elements of historical costumes from periods before the 20th century. Basic terminology related to colour theory and colour psychology in the fashion industry along with the distinction between dressing and fashion. Exercises in recognizing levels of importance of information and text summarization. Learning strategies and reading comprehension strategies in English for Specific Purposes. An introduction to active learning and critical thinking within the context of English for Specific Purposes.

Aim of course

To acquire English for Specific Purposes vocabulary from the fields covered in the course content. To develop listening and reading comprehension skills. To raise awareness of and improve existing strategies, as well as to adopt new strategies for learning and reading comprehension in English for Specific Purposes. To familiarize students with active learning and critical thinking as foundations for successfully mastering the course content.
