Students will be able to:
• Recognize and define basic concepts related to the history of fashion, textiles, and art from the early 20th century to the present day and explain their development.
• Identify terminology related to clothing items from the early 20th century to the present day, define and describe these items.
• Recognize, name, and describe textile patterns, their creation and historical usage.
• Explain the relationship between the film and music industries and fashion in the 20th century.
• Name the most important fashion designers, textile designers, and costume designers of the 20th century, and describe their work.
• Discuss the difference between fashion and style as well as the relationship between fashion and various identities.
• Follow oral presentations related to the textile and fashion fields, ask questions, and participate in discussions on topics outlined in the course content.
• Read and comprehend texts related to textiles and fashion.
• Collaborate to create a poster that represents the development of a clothing item throughout history both linguistically and visually.
• Identify, define, and apply newly acquired learning and reading strategies as tools for better understanding of course content.
Subject content
Basic terminology related to periods in the history of fashion and art as well as the most significant events related to the development of textile production and design from the early 20th century to the present. Analysis of names and changes in the names of clothing items during this period including descriptions of these items. Textile patterns throughout history. The film and music industries of the 20th century as inspiration for fashion and as consumers of fashion. Fashion designers, textile designers, and costume designers who marked the 20th century. Fashion and style, fashion and social, national, gender, and personal identity. Exercises in recognizing levels of importance in information, and text summarization. Application of new learning strategies and reading comprehension strategies in English for Specific Purposes. Communication skills in speaking and writing. Exercises in active learning and critical thinking in English for Specific Purposes.
Aim of course
To acquire the vocabulary of English for Specific Purposes covered in the course content. To develop listening and reading comprehension skills. To adopt new learning and reading comprehension strategies in English for Specific Purposes. To acquire and apply communication skills in speaking and writing necessary for collaborative work. To develop active learning and critical thinking as foundations for successfully mastering the course content.
