Subject content
The importance of medical textiles in the domain of technical textiles. Application in the medical and related healthcare and hygiene sector. Classification: materials for external applications to provide protection against infection, absorb blood and exudate, apply medication to the wound (wound dressings, bandages, plasters); materials for extracorporeal devices – the artificial kidney, the artificial liver and the mechanical lung; implantable materials – sutures, implants (vascular grafts, artificial joints, ligaments, skin); healthcare and hygiene products (surgical gowns, bedding). Fibres properties for medical applications: absorption, strength, biodegradation, resistance to chemical substance and microorganisms, feasibility of sterilization. Specific constructions and forms. Development trend.
Aim of course
Depending on specific knowledge about medical textiles students are qualified for textile products application in medicine.
