Learning outcomes:

The student is able to:
•   distinguish the forms of dress of the individual historical styles and the
    change in silhouette from prehistory to the 18th century;
•   recognize the essential characteristics and starting points of design from
     the style epochs to 18th century fashion;
•   establish criteria for the critical reflection of their own work;
•   distinguish the basic types of historical clothing;
•   distinguish the basic textile ornaments of the individual style periods;

Subject content

An overview of the historical style characteristics of textiles and clothing, from prehistory to the French Revolution. Differentiation between fashion and anti-fashion, definition of fashion, costume, artefact, ready-to-wear and haute couture. Observing the changing rhythms of fashion and determining its basic driving forces as well as the stylistic characteristics of textile and clothing creations. Relate the phenomenon of clothing and fashion to simultaneous events in art and society.

Aim of course

Developing abilities for active perception of clothing, identifying its basic visual characteristics and recognizing the stylistic markers by which textile and clothing fit into the overall visual and social frame of a certain period. Recognizing the meaning of fashion and the dynamics of change in fashion as a powerful initiator of change in all fields of modern life. Setting criteria for critical evaluation of one’s own creations, as well as for evaluation of fashion events.
