Subject content

Introduction to Polymer Chemistry. Macromolecule and polymer. Classification, historical outline. Structure of polymer molecules: configuration, conformation and sub-molecular structure of polymers. Molecular weight, physical properties of polymers. Polymerisation reactions and process. Synthetic polymers: classification, synthesis of monomers and polymers, ecologicaly acceptable synthesis (green chemistry). Modification of polymers: copolymerisation and copolymers. Rubber: natural and synthetic. Natural polymers: structural unit (monosaccharides, amino acids), sterochemistry. Fibres based on natural polymers: properties and reactions.

Aim of course

Chemistry of polymers is giving the students universal knowledge of the macromolecules and polymer materials, and its basic units (monomers). Since the chemical structure and form of the macromolecule induces the diversity of material's physical and chemical characteristics, during this course the students are being acquainted with stereochemistry as a basis for the three-dimensional aspect of the materials. Comprehensive acquirements of the chemistry of polymers provide the students better and more professional assessment of the potential characteristics of the natural and synthetic polymers.
